Summer employee at Toppstodin 2012

Saethor Asgerisson has been hired as the summer employee 2012 and will be with us for three months. He is hired through the Innovation Center and the Directorate of labor. He has a BSc degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iceland in 2008 and is currently working on his masters thesis which is scheduled to be completed in December 2012. In his studies he has focused on energy engineering and renewable energy, everything from hydrogen and electric cars to nuclear engineering. Since 2007 he has been working on and developing vertical axis wind turbines for summerhouses, specially designed to withstand Icelandic weather.

After his BSc degree he began working for Icelandic Hydrogen alongside his masters degree. Saethor will manage and organize the building and setup of the workshops in the basement and will also work on his wind turbines. We welcome him to the team.

 

Concrete – Design and processing – Seminar Series

The last seminar in this series, this time about concrete, its properties processing options and manufacturing.  Kai Westphal quality manager at Steypustodin, a civil engineer and a specialist in concrete will inform us about everything we need to know about concrete.

Concrete is the most common building material in the world and offers almost endless opportunities regarding design. It is not only used in buildings but furniture as well and even ships, during WW2. The use of concrete begin over 2000 years ago and is a very popular material for architects like Tadai Ando and Zaha Hadidi. In Iceland concrete is the most important building material and is made from materials found locally

It’s an open lecture and everyone is encouraged to come.

 

Flux – Exhibition on Design March at Toppstodin

At toppstodin a variety of people come together working on different projects from graphic design to electric race car building. Among the projects this year is the “Walking on rocks and glass” and LIGHTHOUSE “Lux – About the lightbulb” and sound effects from Hafdís Bjarnadottir composer.

It will be open on Saturday the 24th of march from 11:00-17:00 and on Sunday the 25th from 13:00-17:00.

The following designers and project will be on display:

  • DLD Land Design – “Walking on rocks and glass”
  • Asta Creative – “Storm feathers”
  • Hnoss – Graphical design and product development
  • IBA – The Indian in me – Personal jewelry and design clothing.
  • Shadow Creatures – Chlothing design
  • Spark – Designing and building of an electric race car.

 

Photoshop seminar about to begin

Petur Thomsen is holding a seminar for beginners in Photoshop here at Toppstodin.  The seminar will cover all the basics from color management to raw data processing and much much more.  Participants need to have a laptop with them, setup with photoshop.


 

Registration has begun and the seminar will be held on the 12th, 14th and the 19th of march.

 

From sheep to string – Seminar Series

On Wednesday 7th of march at 12:10 Hulda Hakonardottir marketing manager at Istex will tell us about wool. The seminaris called from sheep to string where she tells us about its journey from the back of the sheep all the way to the shelfs.

Istex buys directly from the farmer and manufactures many different types of wool products and also publishes books on knitting and different

 

designs.

It’s an open lecture and everyone is encouraged to come.

 

Plastics – Production and processing – Seminar Series

On the 24th of January the 4th seminar in the series  will be held. The subject this time is plastics.  Gudbrandur Sigurdsson the CEO of Plastprent will talk about plastics and its usefulness in all sorts of industry. The lecture is divided into three parts, first the products and the operation at Plastprent. Second the plastic market in Iceland, how its divided into plastics, paper and metals. And finally the history of plastics their historical use in industry and the recycling process.

It’s an open lecture and everyone is encouraged to come.

 

New photography seminar about to start

The popular photography seminar of Petur Thomsen is about to begin again this spring.

PhotographyThe seminar is for beginners and medium advanced users using “mirror” cameras and DSLR cameras such as Canon Eos 450D, Eos 60D, Nikon D5000, D3100 or compatable.

All the basics will be covered, on how to take better pictures and to get the most out of your camera. The functionality of all buttons, settings and menus will be covered as well as shutter speed, ISO, WB, RAW files, lighting, depth clarity and more.

Windows and glass in buildings – Lecture Series

GlerThe third seminar in the lecture series at Toppstodin will be held on the 23rd of November from 12:10-13:00. This time Ragnar Pálsson industrial technician and CEO of Samverk Glass manufacturing will talk about glass working, glass in buildings and the manufacturing process. Samverk was founded in 1969 and Ragnar has been in charge since 1995. The factory and sales division is located at Hella and also have a display room at Vikurhvarf 6 in Kopavogur. Their main production is double insulation glass mirrors, glass doors, walls and more.

Petur Thomsen photographer and artist held a series of photography seminars on the use of digital cameras last spring. They were fully booked and this fall he has decided to repeat the seminar.
